How has globalisation changed India and how has it helped and hindered development there?
Since the 1990s, entrepreneurs have been encouraged to set up business in India and lots of MNC’s have invested there. This has led to rapid economic growth as there are many people who are seeking work and will accept low wages. Large numbers of people speak English and lost of people who previously emigrated from India to get work in other countries have returned with new skills.
Globalisation has helped development in India as average living standards appear to be increasing as life expectancy has gone up from 59 years to 68 in 2015 as a result of globalisation. MNC’s have created many new jobs in call centres and hi-tech industries which has resulted in a large number of skills Indians returning back to India which is known as a ‘brain-gain’. These returning people are also helping to form part of India’s growing middle class. In addition, this has caused an increase in mass consumption due to more enormous shopping centres being build and the increase in wealth of many people in India which means more people have cars, TV’s, washing machines and other consumer goods which were once only found in MEDC’s.
However, globalisation has also hindered development in India as, despite the improvements globalisation has brought to India, less than one-third of homes in India have a toilet, and less than half of the villages are connected to the electricity network due to many 455 million Indians still have to survive on $1.25 per day. Also, the increase in foreign products and ideas have damaged traditions in India as many younger Indians are wearing western-style clothes and adopting western behaviours which are seen by many older Indians as shocking.
Overall, globalisation has improved the wealth and lives of many Indians but has also hindered other areas of life in India.
Why is access to the internet not the most effective measure for development?
A country may have good access to the internet but many of the people may be too poor to afford it as they still live in poverty. It also is only one economic indicator and does not account for social measures. HDI is a better measure for development in a country as it uses both social and economic data to rank a country’s development.
