AI/Automated Decision Making
ADVANATAGES:
- Computers don’t have mood or health.
- Computers can retain mass amounts of data.
- A computer offers consistency.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Can’t make ethical decisions.
- Not responsible for its actions.
- Computers are only as good as their algorithms.
Environmental Issues
ADVANTAGES:
- Replace paper documents.
- Used to send products that would normally be sent via plane/lorry.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Computers are made up of rare chemicals that need to be mined.
- Computers are made of toxic chemicals that need to be disposed of properly.
- Computers use electricity and require extensive manufacturing to create, using fossil fuels.
Freedom of Information
ADVANTAGES:
- People can share/access information that would be difficult to gain without the internet.
- People can spread news of emergencies quickly.
- Corruption can be made aware of, bringing justice.
DISADVANTAGES:
- Automated filters allow for the government to monitor millions of citizens.
- Networks are ultimately owned by the government, so they can control what can be accessed.
- It is easy to spread false information/illegal content online.
Privacy and Surveillance
- Organisations like wikileaks/anonymous work to release sensitive documents.
- Governments have enacted powers to surveil widespread online communication.
- Governments have access to big data sets/perform biased analysis.
- Stores gather information about their customers and use it to target them for promotions/offers.
- Social media companies sell their information (political parties).
Privacy
- Online access to file sharing lead to piracy.
- Content providers have had to remodel, with subscription plans offering increasingly better tiers.
- Shows have been leaked online, causing production companies to increase their security.
