Henry VII dated his reign from the 21st of August 1485, the day before the Battle of Bosworth, thereby ensuring that anyone who fought for the Yorkists could be deemed a traitor.

Henry VII conferred 11 knighthoods on the battle field, publically rewarding his loyal servants ; in this way he ensured loyalty whilst the creation of the ‘Order of the Garter’ limited the amount of patronage that he would have to distribute as king (increasing / maintaining his own power).

Henry VII arrested the Earl of Wawick, he had a much stronger claim than Henry to the throne and was a potential figurehead for Yorkist rebellions. By imprisoning him in the tower, Henry had control over a powerful figure of dissent.

Henry VII’s coronation was on the 30th October 1485 whereas the first Parliament was on the 7th November 1485. By calling for parliament after his coronation, Henry demonstrated that his right to the throne was based on heredity rights and the divine right, not because Parliament had sanctioned it.

Henry VII consciously imitated Edward IV after the Battle of Barnet in 1471 at Westminster Cathedral.
* The banner of St. George, the dragon of Cadwalar and a dun cow made up his three standards.
In this way, Henry was flaunting his kingship and right to the throne for everyone to see, emphasising his welsh and kingly heritage.

Henry VII was conscious of the need to appear regal at his coronation ; he wore a velvet gown which cost 40 shillings per yard, and he spent lavishly on ermine, ostrich feathers and saddles.
This displays that, despite his frugality, Henry VII was willing to spend money when it would help to secure his dynasty.

Henry VII made key appointments to his council and household, this included Sir Reginald Bray, Sir William Stanley, John Morton and Richard Fox.
Henry appointed skilled and experienced administrators, in this way he ensure that he had a close and competent circle of advisors upon whom he could rely on for the continuation of his reign.
- Similarly, Margaret Beaufort became an unofficial advisor.

Henry VII’s first parliament granted him ‘tonnage and poundage’ for life, giving him an ordinary source of income. For henry, finances and security were intrinsicly linked.
The Act of Attainder 1486. Attainders were passed against Yorkists who fought at the battle of bosworth, ensuring that they property was forfeit to the crown. This was a long-term source of income as well as a method of financial control over possible threats.

Henry VII married Elizabeth of York in January of 1486, by waiting until other steps towards consolidation had been completed Henry was able to ensure that jis assumption of the crown had not been brought about by his wife’s own claim to the throne.

- Henry emphasised the new found union between the Houses of Lancaster and York by displaying the ‘Tudor Rose’ in Church Stained Glass Windows. Therefore bringing a sense of unity and long-awaited peace to the country
- Henry VII named his first son after the legendary protector of the British, King Arthur, purposefuly having the child be born in Winchester Castle, a place with Arthurian links.
- Henry VII flaunted his Welsh Ancestry by fighting under the Caldward’s Arms (Legendary Kings were Welsh).
- Henry VII flaunted his lancastrian lineage by naming his second son after Henry VI, he presented his murdered relative as a martyr - turning his grave site into a prilgirmage site.
