AS 2.4: Alkenes Flashcards
Unsaturated Hydrocarbon
A compound that contains at least 1 C=C or C≡C bond.
Sigma ( σ ) Bond
A covalent bond formed by the linear overlap of atomic orbitals resulting in a single layer of overlap and free rotation along the bond axis.
Pi (π) Bond
A covalent bond formed by the sideways overlap of p orbitals resulting in a double overlap above and below the sigmabond and restricted rotation along the bond axis.
Bond Length
The distance between the nuclei of two covalently bonded atoms.
Hydrogenation
The addition of a hydrogen molecule across a C=C.
Electrophile
An ion or molecule that attacks reigons of high electron density.
Primary Carbocation
A carbocation which has one carbon atom directly bonded to the positively charged carbon.
Secondary Carbocation
A carbocation which has two carbon atom directly bonded to the positively charged carbon.
Tertiary Carbocation
A carbocation which has three carbon atom directly bonded to the positively charged carbon.
Addition Reaction
A reaction in which two molecules react together to form a single product.
Addition Polymerisation
The process in which many small molecules of the ame substance (monomers) add to each other to form a giant molecule (polymer).
Polymer
A large molecule formed when monomers join together.
Monomer
A small molecule that joins other small molecules to form a polymer.
