AS 2.2:Nomenclature and Isomerism Flashcards
Homologous Series
A series of compounds with the same general formula, the same functional group, differs by a CH₂ group and have similar chemical properties.
Isomerism
When two or more compounds, called isomers, have the same molecular formulabut different arrangements of the atoms.
Functional Group
An atom or group of atoms present in an organic compoundwhich gives the compound its chemical properties. it is a reactive group within a compound.
Structural Isomers
When two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different structursl formulae.
Stereoisomerism
When two or more compounds have the same molecular formula and the same structural formula but different 3D spacial arrangements of their bonds.
Geometric Isomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula and same
Molecular Formula
Shows the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule.
Emperical Formula
Shows the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
Stuctural Formula
Shows how all the atoms are bonded together.
Condensed Structural Formula
Each Carbon is written seperately and following each carbon are the other atoms bonded to it.
