Marshall WG, Filliquist B, Tzimtimis E, et. al. Delayed union, non-union and mal-union in dogs. Veterinary surgery 2022.
Three facts…
• Comminuted fractures were 4 times as likely to result in delayed union or nonunion
• Breed or multiple fractures were not associated with delayed union or nonunion.
• radius/ulna fractures in small breeds were NOT associated with increased risk of delayed union or nonunion
• Factors affecting the incidence of delayed union or nonunion included, comminuted fracture, increasing patient age, bone, graft, application, infection and implant failure.
• patients with increased risk for delayed healing or nonunion (seniors, comminuted fractures) may benefit from stronger stabilization constructs and bone grafts during first intervention, as well as close monitoring.
Beamon W, Duffy D, Chang Y, et al. Effect of calcaneal Boner tunnel orientation for teno-osseous repair in a canine common calcaneal tendon avulsion model. Vet Surg 2022
Three facts…
• Bone tunnel orientation did not affect the biomechanical properties or gapping characteristics of the repair
• Two modes of failure were observed: suture breakage, and suture pull through tendon
• the Three Loop Pulley is recommended over single or double locking pulley patterns
Beer et al. JAVMA 2013 - Plasma Lactate concentration and GDV
Three facts
- 99% of patients with lactate <6 survived
- 58% of patients with lactate >6 survived
- Lactate of 7.4 mmol/L to be 82% accurate for predicting gastric necrosis (sensitivity, 50%; specificity, 88%) ”
Keep in mind: Trends are good to monitor patient response to therapy, but care must be taken when using these values to estimate prognosis given relatively low sensitivity and specificity.
