Article 1 - Anderson et al.: Personality and Status Flashcards
3 components of status (rip)
prominence, respect & influence
·Methods: the three groups (samples) that were studied and why they were chosen (why three instead of one?
Why these three in particular?
1 study: All-male group (fraternities)
2 study: All-female group (sororities)
3 study: Mixed sex group (dormitories)
chose to test if there are sex differences in the emergence & stability of status in correlation with the Big 5
test whether similar traits contribute to
status in mixed sex groups as in same sex groups
chose these 3 to test long-term influences without any hidden variables, & because these 3 are known to have a social hierarchy
Which data sources were used and what can we say about the validity of those data
sources?
For status
observe data: Peer ratings for prominence, influence, status
Life: data number of offices/positions held (study 1)
for physical attractiveness observer data : RA ratings of participant’s video clips
big 5: Self-report data using NEO-FFI (neo -pi -r )(Study 1 & 2) BFI (big five inventory) (study 3)
Observer data: facial action coding system (FACS ) for negative emotion (study 3)
Which variables predicted social status in each of the three studies?
only 3 big 5 traits that are associated with status
Men +E, -N, +Attractviness associated with high status
While women only +E associated with status
For agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness was no correlation between elevated status for either sex
Were the hypotheses supported?
OVERALL YES
researchers hypothesis:
E strong relationship w/status
N will negatively influence the status for men
C & O will not relate to status in face-to-face groups
Physical attractiveness related to higher status for women
no prediction for A
Student predictions
all big would help gain staus oder: +C, -N, +A & +O
Expects A & C more helpful in women than men
