Clinical presentation of osteoarthritis? (5)

A

Symptoms

  • joint pain
  • stiffness worse after activity and end of day
  • activity induced swelling

Signs

  • reduced ROM due to pain
  • tender over joint lines
  • crepitus on movement

A

All of the following:

  • 45 years or older
  • activity related jt pain
  • no morning related jt stiff OR morning stiffness <30min

Treatment osteoarthritis?

A

First line = conservative:

  • advice, exercise muscle strength and cardio, weight loss
  • analgesia, NSAIDS first line.
  • intra-articular steroid injection for Acute pain

Conservative fail = Surgical

  • if severe pain or disability
  • arthroplasty (jt replacement) or arthrodesis (fusion jt)
