arteries, arterioles, veins and capillaries Flashcards
what do Arteries do
they carry blood Away from the heart to rest of body
what are the arteries walls like
thick and muscular
what does the elastic tissue do in the arteries
allow it to stretch and recoil as heart beats
what is the inner lining of arteries like
folded allowing arteries to stretch
what type of blood do arteries carry
oxygenated blood
which type of artery doesn’t carry oxygenated blood and why
pulmonary artery as it takes deoxygenated blood to lungs
what do arteries divide into
smaller vessels called arterioles
what happens in the arterioles
blood flows to body by muscle inside arterioles
what happens when the arterioles
contract
relax
contract- restrict blood flow
relax- allow full blood flow
what do veins do
take blood back to heart from rest of body
what is the pressure like in veins
low
what is the pressure like in arteries
high
what is the lumen and tissue like in veins
it has a large lumen and very little elastic or muscle tissue
what do valves do and where are they found
they stop the blood from flowing backwards and are found in veins
what type of blood do veins carry
deoxygenated blood
