Arterial supply of limbs, including main pulse points Flashcards
What is the arterial supply of the upper limb?
Subclavian artery»_space; axillary artery»_space; brachial artery»_space; radial/ulnar artery
Where does subclavian artery become axillary artery?
Lateral border of the 1st rib
Where does the axillary artery become the brachial artery?
Lower border of the axilla as it enters the arm
What does the brachial artery bifurcate into?
Radial artery
Ulnar artery
Where does the brachial artery bifurcate?
In the cubital fossa (the depression in front of the elbow)
What is the arterial supply of the lower limb?
External iliac artery»_space; femoral artery»_space; popliteal artery»_space; anterior/posterior tibial arteries»_space; dorsalis pedis artery
Where in the lower limb can pulse points be palpated? (4)
Femoral artery - Middle of upper part of anterior thigh
Popliteal artery - Back of the knee
Dorsalis pedis artery - proximal to the split between big and 2nd toes
Posterior tibial artery - Behind medial malleolus
What are the pulse points of the upper limbs? (2)
Brachial artery - halfway down the medial aspect of the arm and halfway between the anterior and posterior surface of the arm
Radial artery - distal end of the forearm, laterally
What does the popliteal artery bifurcate into?
Anterior and posterior tibial arteries
What does the anterior tibial artery become?
Dorsalis pedis artery
Where does the posterior tibial artery run?
Behind and below the medial malleolus of the tibia to enter the plantar surface of the foot.
What is the femoral artery distal to?
External iliac artery
What are the pulse points on the torso/neck? (3)
Carotid artery
Apex beat
Abdominal aorta
