Arterial and Venous Disease Flashcards
what is the function of the calf muscle with blood flow
peripheral heart - soleus and gastrocneimis pump blood through deep veins back to the heart via contractions
outline typres of peripheral venous disease
varicose veins
venous eczma and ulceration
DVT
venous hypertension
the patient will present with muscle cramps and itching along the vein if a symptomatic presentation
varicose veins
dilated veins collapse and distend - slows blood movement
weak vein walls
not nice to look at
venous eczma and ulceration
itchiy , red , ulcerated
can lead to liperdematoslcerosis
a chronic and painful result of venous hypertension
DVT
a thombosis fored , often in veins of the leg
due to virchows triad
occurs in post surgery, pregnancy
will see tender calf, odema, asymetry of legs , pyrexia with no other cause
promote movement after surgery and give prophylaxis to prevent
can cause a fatal pulmonary embolism
outline peripheral arterial disease
cause of acute and chronic limb ischemia
acute
acute occlusion - no time to form collateral circulation
due to trauma or embolism
pain,pulsless,parastehisa,paralysis
refer to surgery asap
chronic -
will see intermittent claudication
or critcal ischemia at rest
can cause ulceration/gangrene
where are the lower limb pulses
Femoral artery - MIPA - asis and pubic symph
Poplteal pulse - deep in the fossa
Posterior tibial pulse - behind the medial malleolus
Dorsis pedalis pulse - lateral to EHL tendon
Doppler
give it a go but not vital
