who was hannah hoch?
german weimar-era artist most recognised for her dada artwork. she performed collage work known as photomontage.

describing the artwork: indian dancer
the assembled pieces reference film, central african sculpture, and the domestic sphere. the collaged model is the actress falconetti, appearing in a 1928 film. half of her face is replaced by a wooden dance mask.
what is hoch trying to communicate through ‘indian dancer’?
- the short haircut reflected the haircut of the modern german ‘new woman’ who could go out and get a job.
- it appears the woman is wearing a crown, depicting royalty.
- however, the crown is more of a joke because it bears cutlery, the stereotypical drudgery of a housewife.
- many layers of femineity: film star, modern woman, non-western woman.
how has colour been used to create mood in ‘indian dancer’?
- muted colours create a gloomy mood, reflecting the suppressed image of this woman who is still unequal to men.
- green background may represent new life, a sliver of hope regarding gender equality for the future.
