Type of mark with direction and length
Shape
Area within closed line: Organic or geometric
Form
3D with volume and mass, described by height, width, depth
Space
Illusion creates feeling of depth. Area between objects=negative space
Color
Made of light. 3 characteristics: hue (name), intensity (bright/dull), value (light/dark)
Texture
Surface quality seen and felt. 1) Real-can be felt 2) Simulated-only seen
Balance
Distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical=even. Asymmetrical=uneven
Contrast
Placement of opposing elements in art. Varies in line, shape, etc.
Pattern
Regular repetition of at least 1 element. Planned or random
Rhythm
Visual tempo or beat using art elements
Emphasis
Dominance or focal point. Catches attention
Movement
Arrangement of elements to create visual motion
Unity
Wholeness, artwork feels complete

Primary colors
Blue, red, yellow
Secondary colors
Orange, green, purple
Tertiary
Mixing primary and secondary. Red-orange, yellow-green, yellow-orange, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet
Warm colors
Vivid, energetic, evoke warmth, move forward in space. Red, orange, yellow (think fire)
Cool colors
Calm, soothing, evoke coldness, recede in space. Blue, purple, green (think water)
White, black, grey
Neutral colors, not found on color wheel
Tints
Add white to a color
Shades
Add black to a color
Tones
Add grey to a color
Complementary colors
Directly across each other on color wheel. Yellow-purple, red-green, blue-orange
Analogous color scheme
Colors next to each other on color wheel. Red, red purple, purple
Triadic color scheme
Only 3 colors evenly spread apart on color wheel
