Arousal Flashcards
Arousal definition
psychological state of alertness and anticipation that prepares the body for action
Drive theory
Arousal and performance are directly proportional
+shows relationship
-simplistic
-doesn’t show negatives to over arousal
Drive reduction
If performer feels they are performing at their best they may lose drive to do better
Reactive inhibition - if performer believes they have done their best and reached their goal, they may lose interest and less effort, decrease in performance
Inverted U theory
Optimal level of arousal
Under and over aroused
+different arousal for different activities
+too much or too little can be bad
-simplistic
-doesn’t explain recovery from over arousal
Catastrophe theory
Rise then extreme drop in performance Cognitive anxiety increase when somatic anxiety decreases \+explains recovery well \+Shows different paths -there is not always an extreme decline
