Arm, forearm and hand Flashcards
Why is the axilla so important?
Contains crucial neurovascular structures which is why the skin there is so sensitive
Brachial plexus and lymph nodes
What is the brachial plexus?
Group of nerves that pass from the neck, through the axilla, behind the pectoralis minor and takes all info to/from the arm
Axillary artery runs through it
Position of raidus and ulna
In the anaotmical position the radius is on the lateral side and the ulna is on the medial side
What is the elbow joint capable of?
Flexion and extension
Supination
Radius rotates over the top of the ulna when palm of hand is facing upwards
Pronation
Opposite of supination, back of hand is turned over so radius rotates back under ulna
Fascial compartments
Anterior flexes the arm and posterior extends the arm
Stop infections spreading as much
Anterior compartment
Triceps brachii which contains its medial, lateral and long heads
What nerve supplies the anterior compartment?
Musculocutaneous nerve
What nerve supplies the posterior compartment?
Radial nerve
Where does the triceps brachii tendon attach to?
The olecranon of ulna
Where does the axillary artery become the brachial artery?
When it passes through the teres major
Cephalic vein
Lateral and superficial
Drains into axillary vein
What is the cubital fossa?
Triangular shape in the elbow crease bordered by pronator teres medially and brachioradialis laterally
