Aristotle Flashcards
What are the three main challenges for Aristotle’s theory?
-Can we trust our sense or are we being deceived.
-Do all things certainly have a purpose?
-Fallacy of composition
What is a weakness with Aristotle’s view of Cosmology?
Though he uses empiricism his view is not reflective of the contemporary view.
What are the 2 strengths of the four cases?
-relatively is easy to apply and is reflective of science. e.g the formal and material cause
-to an extent we can observe most things having a purpose
What are 3 weaknesses of the four causes?
-There are some things which do not such as abstract concepts have a material cause e.g colour
-Hume, mixing causation with correlation
-illusion of purpose can be seen through evolution Charles Darwin
What is a strength of the PRIME MOVER?
-avoids the problem of evil because it is immutable and transcendent
-We care able to see alot of things which are drawn to purpose e.g acorn turning into an oak tree
Weakness of Aristotle’s PRIME MOVER?
-Theist would completely disagree with this view as it creates a God who lacks the omni characteristics
-Why is there one cause, can it can be seen that many things cause change why is the PM the cause of all of it
-If the prime mover is pure thought how is there anything that is causal
