ARGUMENTS ! Flashcards
inductive argument
use of premise to supply strong evidence for the truth of the conclusion ( abt. probability + give us new knowledge) therefore not certain : not certain many people have legs pippa is a person therefore pippa has legs
premise :
a proposition that helps support a new conclusion
reasoning :
a proposition which makes the basis for a theory
conclusion :
a judgement or decision reached by reasoning
weak inductive argument !
premises are TRUE but…
CONCLUSION could easily be FALSE
strong inductive argument !
premises are TRUE and…
CONCLUSION is HIGHLY LIKELY TO BE TRUE
deductive argument :
if BOTH premises are TRUE the conclusion cannot be questioned, and is then 100% true
eg: all bachelors are unmarried
Boris is a bachelor
therefore Boris is unmarried
true by definition ( tautology)
if premises are true, conclusion must be true therefore DA can produce certainties !
unsound deductive argument
argument is VALID but…
at least ONE of the premises is FALSE !
sound deductive argument
argument is VALID
premises are TRUE
conclusion FOLLOWS ON FROM PREMISE
