Argument
A process of reasoned inquiry
Assumption
accepted as true without proof
Bias
Favoring one side, position, or belief, generally unannounced.
Concession
A form of rebuttal that agrees with the opposing viewpoint on a certain, smaller point, but not the larger argument.
Counterargument
A position taken by someone with an opposing viewpoint.
Deductive Reasoning
Start with theory
Conclude with obervations
Inductive reasoning
Start with observations
Conclude with a theory
(That backs up their observations)
Polemic
Greek for “hostile.” An aggressive argument that tries to establish the superiority of one opinion over all others. Polemics generally do not concede that opposing opinions have any merit.
Premise
A fact, proposition, or statement from which a conclusion is made.
Propaganda
The communication of information to spread certain ideas, beliefs, or practices and shape or influence public opinion.
Refutation
addresses the counterargument.
Syllogism
a logical structure that uses the major premise and minor premise to reach a necessary conclusion.
Claim
a claim states the argument’s main idea or position. A claim differs from a topic or subject in that a claim has to be arguable.
Warrant
Bridge between evidence and claim
Grounds
Evidence for supporting the argument.
