ARDS Flashcards
What is ARDS?
Non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and diffuse lung inflammation - usually due to an underlying illness.
What are pulmonary causes of ARDS?
Sepsis
Aspiration
Inhalation injury
Pulmonary contusion
Transfusion-related lung injury
What are non-pulmonary causes of ARDS?
Sepsis
Acute pancreatitis
DIC
Drug overdose
How does ARDS present?
Acute onset respiratory failure, with no improvement on oxygen therapy.
Will have:
Severe dyspnoea
Confusion
Pre-syncope
Raised RR
Bilateral lung crackles
Low O2 sats
How does ARDS present on a CXR?
Bilateral alveolar infiltrates with NO OTHER heart failure features.
How is ARDS treated?
Oxygen therapy - some may need mechanical ventilation (at a low tidal volume).
