An alpine tundra landscape that provides many attractions. In the summer there’s: camping, hunting, fishing and walking
Winter: cross country skiing and snowmobiling

How much of White Mountain is a protected area and what is this called?
A
400,000 hectares and it’s called the White Mountains Recreational Area

Give three ways that the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the area
A
- A network of ATV routes has been established- artificial soil protection is used to prevent damage and melting of permafrost, there are also ditches to prevent water logging
- Panning for gold is permitted in a small area of Nome Creek with only hand tools allowed
- All hunters in the area need work permits, strictly controlling the level of hunting. Rangers patrol the area to prevent illegal hunting
