Q

What activities do Antarctic tourists undertake and why could it be argued that Antarctic tourism is sustainable?

A

They take photos and go cross country skiing and mountaineering. It could be argued to be sustainable as it is small scale.

Q

What happened in 2009 regarding the Antarctic treaty signatories and tourist numbers?

A

They agreed to limit tourist numbers to 20 tourists per expert guide, only 1 cruise ship can be present at a landing site and each site can only be visited every 2 or 3 days

Q

Some findings show that Antarctic tourism has had little effect on the environment, give examples of these

A
  1. Antarctic tourism is well run and has a good record
  2. Guidelines are widely accepted by operators and tourists alike, they need updating to include the environmental protocol of the UN
  3. Damage to vegetation is down to natural causes e.g. Breeding seals and not tourists
  4. No litter is attributed to tourists, they’re more concerned about the litter they see around research stations
  5. Virtually no disturbance is caused to breeding penguins
  6. Seals are indifferent to the presence of humans
  7. Of the 200 landing sites only 5% show wear and tear but these need to be rested

Q

What are the concerns over Antarctic tourism?

A
  1. The Antarctic ecosystem is extremely fragile
  2. The summer tourist season is also the breeding season for many Antarctic animals, their presence could upset natures balance
  3. Pressure on certain landing sites e.g. Old whaling stations and historic sites such as McMurdo Sound where the original huts from Scott’s expedition were found
  4. Demand for fresh water is difficult to meet
  5. Land based installations and wildlife are clustered in ten few ice free locations
  6. Some evidence that over-flying by light planes and helicopters is causing distress to penguin and other bird colonies
  7. Unique legal status of Antarctica makes any code of conduct difficult to enforce
  8. Impacts on the Antarctic ecosystem with invasive species such as the Mediterranean mussel, being brought into the region on the hulls of cruise ships

16
Q

How much oil is estimated to be in Antarctica and what metal ore is under the Trans-Atlantic Mountains?

A

10 billion barrels and iron ore

17
Q

When will there be increasing pressure to exploit Antarctica’s natural resources?

A

When natural resources begin to run out

18
Q

What may global warming do in terms of the possibility of an Antarctic settlement?

A

Global warming may open up the edges of Antarctica to permanent settlement

19
Q

What did the Madrid protocol admit about the state of the world’s natural resources?

A

It said that one day Antarctica’s natural resources may have to be exploited and that the protocol is due for review in 2048
