What is Freud’s model of psyche?
Conscious - thoughts, perceptions
Subconscious - memories, stored knowledge
Unconscious - fears, violent motives, irrational wishes
What are the 3 drives in Freud’s model of psyche?
Id, ego and superego
What is the id responsible for?
pleasure, selfish desires, fear, anger
What is the ego responsible for?
reality, logic, balance
What is the superego responsible for?
morality, guilt, conscience
What is a Freudian Slip?
when the unconscious mind lets something slip through to the conscious mind
What does the unconscious mind do to harmful thoughts/memories?
stops them from becoming conscious as a defense mechanism
What are the 4 defense mechanisms?
repression
denial
displacement
minimilisation
What is repression?
bottling problems up
What is denial?
pretending that there is no problem?
what is displacement?
taking emotions out on another object or person
what is minimisation?
telling yourself its not as big a deal as it is
What are the psychosexual stages of development?
oral
anal
phallic
latent
genital
What is the oral stage of psychosexual development?
swallowing, sucking on objects
0-2
ego develops
What is the anal stage of psychosexual development?
witholding or expelling faeces
2-3 year old
What is the phallic stage of psychosexual development?
oedipus complex
3-6 yrs old
superego develops
What is the latent stage of psychosexual development?
little or no sexual motivation, child develops mastery of world around them
6-12 yrs old
what is the genital stage of psychosexual development?
begins experiencing sexual attraction and directs child towards adult life

What is the oedipus complex?
freud believed that during the phallic stage of the psychosexual stages, a girl is attracted to her father and a boy is attracted to his mother
