Appointments And Probationary Periods Flashcards
Appointment
An appointment occurs when an applicant accepts an offer of employment and a date of hire is agreed-upon with the appointed authority.
New Hire
When you accept and appointment, you are considered a New Hire. As such, you are required to serve a probationary period of either 6 months or 1 year.
Reemployment
Appointments that do not result in a break of service. Types are as follows
1) Military
2) Permanent employees that have been laid off
3) Reclassification of a position to a lower class
4) Restoration of a promotional employee who fails to become permanent
5) Seasonal employees
6) permanent disability suffered from a work injury.
Reinstatement
If you have previously resigned and are in good standing with the State, you maybe be reinstated to a position of similar grade or class if you meet the minimum qualifications.
Probationary periods may be waived, but employees must wait 6 months before applying for promotional recruitments.
Reappointment
If you are a current worker for the state, you can be reappointed to a class you formerly held or comparable class if you have the minimum qualifications and receive approval. Individuals cannot be reappointed to higher grade classes. If you were a probationary period employee, you must serve a new probationary period.
Transfer
A request for transfer should be made directly to the hiring agency. Transfers allow you to keep benefits, retirement, sick, and annual time. An employee with a PP must serve out the remainder of it for a job of the same class. Different class transfers require a new PP if the employee is currently in a PP.
Demotion
An employee may be demoted to a position in a class with a lower grade level if the employee meets the minimum requirements and is approved.
Promotion
Promotion is an advancement to a vacant position in a class with a higher grade than previously held. A new probationary period (trial period) will begin and if you fail to attain permanent status, you will be restored to the position of which you were promoted.
Other Appointments
State government has other types of appointments, such as:
Provisional
Emergency
Temporary
Probationary Period/Status of Appointment
New hires are ‘probationary employees.’ After the PP has ended, employees are considered permanent. A promotion results in a new ‘trial period’
PPs for grades 19 and below are 6 months
PPs for grades 20 and above are 1 year
Acceptance of New Appointment
State employees are required to give two weeks written notice before starting a new appointment unless both appointing authorities agree on a shorter time.
Nepotism/Dating Relationship
The state prohibits working in direct line (department chain of command) with a dating relationship or family member.
