1

Applying the values of care ensures that individuals using health, social care and childcare environments receive appropriate care, do not experience discriminatory attitudes, and have their diversity valued and their rights supported
2

A
- Promoting Equality and Diversity
- Promoting Individual Rights and Beliefs
- Maintaining Confidentiality
3
Q
How can care workers promote equality and diversity?
A
- Avoiding discriminatory language when talking to service users and colleagues (and using the individual’s preferred form of address)
- Ensuring there is choice available to meet their diverse needs (in terms of treatment options/dietary needs, etc.)
- Valuing diversity through providing for cultural and religious requirements (e.g. celebrating different cultural festivals within the care setting - diwali, Eid, Hanukkah, etc.)
4
Q
How can care workers promote individual rights and beliefs?
A
- Enable the patient/service user to dress themselves if they are able to and choose what they wear
- Giving them choice in what clothes they wear/what activities they join in with (person centred approach)
- Maintaining privacy by knocking before entering the patient’s room
- Providing access to an advocate to help them understand about different treatment options/exercise some level of choice
- Having a prayer room/multi faith space within the hospital/care setting
- Ensuring the environment is accessible for those with disabilities and making reasonable adjustments (communication methods, etc.)
5
Q
How can care workers maintain confidentiality?
A
- Passing on information about service users on a ‘need to know basis’ so their personal information is kept confidential
- Not gossiping about patients and their health issues with colleagues when other service users can overhear the conversation in public places
- Storing service users’ records securely in password protected files
- Holding private consultations such as care plan meetings in private - behind closed doors
- Inform patients of information that cannot be kept confidential or get consent to share information with other agencies
