applying methods of modifying to schizophrenia Flashcards
what does biological explanations focus on ?
biological causes of SZ specifically imbalances of dopamine and brain abnormalities which as hemisphere size. This uses a nature perspective to explain SZ
what does individual difference explanations focus on ?
how cognitive dysfunctions can affect the way we think feel and behaviour. our early childhood may cause SZ due to issues in oral stage and us regressing when we’re stressed
what does social psychological explanations focus on ?
on how environmental stressors may trigger SZ in genetically vulnerable people which as where you live and ethnicity can also trigger SZ symptoms thus taking a nurture perspective
how does the biological explanations affects our behaviour ?
dopamine hypothesis - positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions,
brain abnormalities - cortical atrophy could cause damage to the area of the brain responsible for emotions leading to affective flattening resulting in alogia
how does the individual differences explanations effect our behaviour ?
psychodynamic - regression to the oral stage can lead to delusions
cognitive - faulty thought can lead to hallucinations
how does social psychological explanations affect our behaviour ?
dysfunctional families - communication difficulties can increase positive symptoms such as hallucinations
socio cultural factors - living in an urban area can increase positive symptoms such as hallucinations
what method of modifying could treat biological explanations ?
could be modified by treating symptoms with antipsychotics as it is a biological treatment. Atypical would be used as it treats both positive and negative symptoms as it targets D2-D4 serotonin receptors, these bind to the receptors to block dopamine which reduces positive symptoms of hallucinations and delusions, it also block serotonin receptors which reduces negative symptoms of alogia and effective flattening. over time reduces overall productions of dopamine and serotonin in the body bringing the levels down normally.
what method of modifying could treat individual differences explanations ?
CBT can be used to treat these faulty thought processes through a stage called psycho education which allows the patient to understand and normalise their symptoms and eventually help correct them through behavioural skills training. this stage can also prove effective coping strategies to prevent the patient regressing to the oral stage of development when in a stressed environment
what method of modifying could treat social psychological explanations ?
CBT could be used to treat avolition through the psycho education stage of therapy teaching the client about their symptoms and normalising them, behavioural skills training could also then be used to help teach someone how to deal with the stress that may come from socialising and everyone the withdrawal through techniques . CBT can also help with the increased risk of relapse through relapse prevention strategies where the client tis taught how to notice signs of relays whilst creating a plan of what to do.
