Naming of drugs

  • Chemical – precise description of a drug’s chemical composition
  • Generic- name assigned by the manufacturer that first developed the drug; often derived from the chemical name; variable within countries, but may be international (e.g. aspirin)
  • Trade name – also known as brand name; drug name selected by the company marketing the drug; protected by a Registered trademark
