Applications of Intelligence Flashcards
What is the main way in which intelligence can be assessed?
Multi-domain tests, giving an overall IQ score.
What are the two main things that IQ scores can predict?
Educational attainment.
Job performance.
What are the two main ways in which emotional intelligence can be assessed?
Ability model - Objective tests, giving an overall EQ score.
Trait model - Self-report questionnaires, giving different scores in different aspects of emotion-related self-perceptions.
What is ability EI (MSCEIT) good at predicting?
Social deviance. Peer liking. Conflict.
Good for predicting wellbeing but less evidence than with trait EI.
What is trait EI good at predicting?
Deviant behaviour. Marital satisfaction.
Very good at predicting wellbeing - health, mental health, self-efficacy, coping.
Academic achievement - very weak predictive utility; stronger when IQ is low - compensation/coping?
How well does IQ and the Big Five predict job performance (O’Boyle, 2011)?
42% of performance.
Especially high conscientiousness.
How well do MSCEIT scores predict teamwork performance (Clarke, 2010)?
Predicted team members’ ratings of project analysis, goal setting, motivation and managing relationships.
How many companies use psychometric tests during job application process?
75%.
But these measures are often not valid measures of personality or IQ. The tests can be matched to the role (IQ and EI aspects).
EI measures increasing in use but still not as common as cognitive ability tests.
How can EI be used in job development?
Identify employees to develop and target training to their needs.
What are some of the issues with occupational ability testing?
Conceptualisation - abstract capacity vs work sample.
Validity - not all tests validated in same way/may over-rely on acquired knowledge. Different skills needed in different roles - how do you choose the criterion level?
Bias - some tests may disadvantage some groups.
Which tests are better - first or second generation intelligence tests?
Second - more fair and more valid - but not adopted by employers yet.
How can IQ tests be used in educational settings?
Selection.
Evaluation.
What are some negatives of using IQ testing in educational settings?
Causality can’t be inferred - is educational performance equivalent to intelligence?
Validity - effects of practice, test anxiety.
How can IQ tests be used for diagnosis?
Identify children with different learning needs.
Second generation tests allow for identification and understanding of learning disabilities.
What are some negatives of using IQ testing for diagnosis?
There is a stigma of labelling.
It doesn’t actually tell us how to help low achievers.
