Application: Strategies for crime prevention Flashcards
Name 3 strategies which could help prevent crime.
- Surveillance
- Target Hardening
- Stimulating conscience
- Access control
- Denying benefits
- Facilitating compliance
What is meant by target hardening?
Makes crime more difficult to commit. For example fixing immobilisers on cars, a secure lock on a bike etc.
What is meant by stimulating conscience?
For example, putting up signs such as ‘shoplifting is stealing’.
What is meant by access control?
Makes it difficult for criminals to get into places to commit crimes. For example having entry phone access on buildings.
What is meant by denying benefits?
Make the crime less worth it for the criminal. For example ink-filled security tags on items of clothing.
What is meant by facilitating compliance?
Encourage people not to drop litter, bins should be provided; public loos should be available so that people don’t urinate in the street.
