APES Chapter 21 Flashcards
green-collar jobs
jobs resulting from new employment opportunities in a more sustainably oriented economy, such as jobs in renewable energy
solar energy
energy from the sun that is renewable and can be captured in different ways
passive solar
an approach in which buildings are designed and building materials are chosen to maximize their direct absorption of direct sunlight in the winter and keep the interior cool during the sumer
active solar
an approach in which technological devices are used to focus, move or store solar energy
concentrated solar power (CSP)
idk…
photovoltaic cells (PV cells)
a device designed to collect sunlight and directly convert it to electrical energy by making use of the photoelectric effect
thin-film solar cells
pv materials compressed in super thin sheets
net-metering
process by which owners of houses with pv systems or wind turbines can sell their excess energy to their local power utility
wind energy
energy form the motion of the wind
wind turbines
a mechanical assembly that converts the wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy
not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY)
syndrome in which people do not want somethig near where they live, even if they want or need that thing to exist somewhere
geothermal energy
renewable energy that is generated deep within the earth, the radioactive decay of elements amid the extremely high pressures and temperatures at depth generate heat that rises to the surface in magma through fissures and cracks. this energy heats ground water and naturally erupts in geysers
enhanced geothermal systems (EGS)
a new approach whereby engineers drill deeply into rock, fracture it, pump in water, then pump it out once it’s heated below ground
ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs)
a pump that harnesses geothermal energy from near surface sources of earth and water in order to heat or cool buildings
wave energy
energy harnessed from the motion f wind-driven waves at the ocean’s surface
