Author’s purpose
His or her reason for creating a particular work. It can be to explain, inform, entertain, express an opinion, or persuade.
Ballad
A poem that tells a story and is meant to be sung or recited.
Caesura
A pause or a sudden break in a line of poetry.
Characteristics
techniques that writers use to make characters visible
Character trait
A character’s personality; this does not physically describe.
Direct Characterization
Directly stated traits or about a character’s nature.
Dynamic character
changes throughout the course of the story
flat character
little information is provided
Indirect Characterization
The author does not directly state traits or personality.
Round Character
Several traits and background information; fully described
Static Character
does not change or does very little through the course of the story
