Active System that receives info from the senses, puts that info into a usable form, and organizes it as it stores it away, and then receives the info from storage
Encoding
Set of mental operations that people perform on sensory info to convert that info into a form that is usable in the brain’s storage system
Storage
Holding onto info for some period of time
Retrieval
Getting info that is in storing into a form that can be used
Sensory Memory
first stage of memory, the point at which info enters the nervous system through the sensory systems
Iconic Mem
Visual sensory memory, lasting only a fraction of a second
Eidetic Imagery
Ability to access a visual men for 30+ sec
Echoic Imagery
Brief mem of something a person has just heard
Short term mem (STM)
Mem sys in which info is held for brief periods of time while being used
Selective Attention
Ability to focus on only one stimulus from among all sensory input
Maintenance Rehearsal
Practice of saying some info to be remembered over and over in one’s head in order to maintain it in short term memory
Long term Memory (LTM)
System of men into which all info is placed to be kept more or less permanently
Elaborative Rehearsal
A method of transferring info from STM into LTM by making that info meaningful in some way
Anterograde Amnesia
Loss of memory from the point of injury/ trauma forward, or the inability to form new LTM’s
Implicit mem
Mem that’s not easily brought into conscious awareness, such as procedural memory
