one-word utterances
12-18 months. because they only know a few words, children tend to overgeneralise in this stage even if it is not what they mean.
two-word utterances
18-24 months. only contains content words, therefore interpretation depends on context.
telegraphic stage
24-30 months. seems more similar to a sentence, however function words still lack.
how can children handle difficult consonant clusters?
- leaves one consonant out
- resort to a different similar consonant
- inserting a vowel between the consonants
what is over- and under- generalisation?
overgeneralisation occurs when children use one lexeme to refer to a wide range of potentially unrelated objects.
undergeneralisation occurs when children use one lexeme to refer to a more limited set of contexts than usual.
compare inflectional and derivational morphemes.
inflectional morphemes do not change meaning/word class. they simply provide additional grammatical info.
derivational morphemes change the meaning of words.
