What is panic disorder?
Repeated, unpredictable panic attacks. (not all of the panic attacks have to be unpredictable, but some do)
What are the criteria to meet for panic disorder?
At least a month of experiencing:
- worry about panic attacks
- significant behavior change to cope with panic attacks
Is panic disorder more common in men or women?
Women (5:2)
What is agoraphobia?
Fear of at least 2 public areas
What is another factor that would lead to a diagnosis of agoraphobia?
Avoidance of the feared places

Are medications an effective way to treat panic disorder?
In the short term yes, but as a long term way to get rid of panic disorder no. It might even create panic attacks if an individual were to run out of medication.
What is the comprehensive learning theory?
The idea that the initial panic attacks become associated with initially neutral internal and external cues via classical conditioning.
What is generalized anxiety disorder?
Excessive anxiety and worry about a number of events or activities, occurring most days for at least 6 months. (people with GAD have difficulty controlling their worry)
What are the criteria to meet for generalized anxiety disorder?
And individual has to have at least 3 of the following:
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Fatigue
- Difficulties concentrating
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
- Difficulties sleeping
Is GAD more common in women or men?
Women (2:1)
Is agoraphobia more common in men or women?
Women (2:1)
What is the difference between someone with GAD and someone who worries about things?
The amount of time spent on the worrying. Everyone worries about things from time to time, but it is when the amount of time spent worrying is increased and sustained that a person has GAD.
