What is an Anxiety Disorder?
“normal” anxiety is when the physiological and psychological response to stress is adaptive and symptom, however it turns pathological when it is for an extreme duration and severity, disproportionate to real life events, and in absence of precipitating event
*Phobic Disorders
persistent, excessive, irrational fear and avoidance of specific objects, activities, or situations
What are the 5 categories of objects?
animals, environment, situations, blood injections/injury, and others
these are related to specific phobias
Social Phobia
fear of being publicly humiliated/embarrassed and the gender different between females and males is 14%>12%
Etiology of Phobic Disorders
there is the preparedness theory which states that it is evolutionary and we have learned over time, there is temperament which states shy and inhibited infants are more likely to have phobias, and conditioning to phobias
*Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia
sudden occurence of multiple physiological and psychological symptoms producing feeling of terror
-it can also be accompanied by agoraphobia which is the fear of public spaces
Acute Symptoms of Panic Disorder
shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, dizziness, depersonalization, derealization, and fear that one is going crazy or dying
-these symptoms are short lived
DSM Diagnosis Requirement for Panic Disorder
recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and feeling of dread or anxiety about potential future attacks
US Adult Population Rate of Panic Disorder
22% of the population has at least 1 panic attack and and about 5% of people are diagnosed with the disorder and women are twice as likely to have the disorder
Etiology of Panic Disorder
sodium lactate is a type of chemical that those with panic disorder are sensitive to and that genetics is involved for this disorder in being hereditary
*Generalized Anxiety Disorder
chronic excess generalized anxiety without a precipitating cause with at least 3 of the following symptoms: restlessness, fatigue, concentration problems, irritability, muscles tension, sleep disturbance. There is also a feeling of a loss of control
US Adult Population with GAD
there are around 6% that have this disease and it is more common for females that have a percentage of 8% to males who have a percentage of 5%
Etiology of GAD
modest level of heritability and neurotransmitters like GABA, but also stress/anxiety provoking situations
Shared Characteristics of Anxiety Disorders
there are psychological which are personality, coping styles, and intellectual functioning, there are situational which are negative life events and social learning, and finally there are biological which are heritability and genetic but also neurotransmitters
