Anxiety and attention 4 Flashcards
Lytteton (2014) describes the penalty shootout as….
“football at its most basic: a ball, a kicker and a goalkeeper”. However, as seen by England’s 14% success rate, it is not quite that simple.
A potential explanation for this is what?
The concept of ‘choking’
How has choking been defined?
as “performing worse than expected in a competition of high perceived importance, due to self-regulatory breakdown” (Baumeister, 1984).
Examples of choking have been shown by…..
Jordet et al (2007) who found that players score on fewer than 60% of their attempts when a miss will result in a loss for the team compared to 92% of their attempts when the goal will win the game.
What is therefore essential to prevent the consequences of choking?
that players are able to control their thoughts and behaviours in that high-pressure state
A limitation of the BASES statement is that….
there is no reference to the concept of choking or its potential psychological causes.
Future developments of the statement should address….
some of the underlying reasons for choking and psychological strategies to help players overcome this issue.
