Why does stress occur
The perceived imbalance between the demands of the task and the individuals ability to complete the task
What are somatic responses
Any change in the physiological response experienced by the performer eg. An increase in the n heart rate
What is eustress
A positive form of stress which performers actively seek to test their ability
What is anxiety
The negative form of stress which can lead to an increase in arousal and a decrease in performance levels
What are the 4 stages when placed in a stressful situation
Environmental demands
Perception of the environmental demand
Stress response
Actual behaviour
What is meant by environmental demands
The individual having to cope with the physical or physiological demand
What is meant by the perception of the demands
The individual makes a specific judgment about the specific requirements of the task
What is meant by stress response
Once a judgment is made the individual will experience a response somatic or cognitive
What is meant by behaviour
The performer then attempts to execute the skill
Define stress
The nonspecific response of the body to any demand made on it
