What are the 3 categories of symptoms of anxiety?
Physical
Cognitive
Behaviour
Within cognitive symptoms what is the difference between derealisation and depersonalisation?
Derealisation - feeling that objects and world around isn’t real
Depersonalisation - feeling that the self is distant or “not really here”
To be diagnosed with GAD (generalised anxiety disorder), what 3 criteria must be met?
- present on most days for at least 6 months
- not controllable
- causing significant functional impairment
CBT is first line management of GAD but Pharma can be offered too. What drugs are recommended first line?
SSRI/SNRI
Pregablin (painkiller) - GABA agonist
When should benzodiazepines be used?
Only used short term - can be addictive and cause withdrawal problems if used for 2wks+
Can be used short term in GAD and phobias
What is the main pathway of drug pharma treatment in general for all forms of anxiety
CBT followed by:
- SSRIs/SNRIs
- Benzodiazepines - short term only
What tricyclic antidepressant can be used in OCD?
Clomipramine
What is the word used to describe the nature of the obsessive thoughts present in OCD?
Ego-dystonic (damaging to self and not thoughts typically felt)
What differentiates the thoughts experienced in OCD from schizophrenia?
OCD - aware that they are their own thoughts
If someone is diagnosed with OCD will it eventually go away?
No - chronic condition - will always be there to varying degrees
What are the three branches of phobias?
Specific/simple
Agoraphobia
Social
Describe social phobia
Scared of SMALL groups - where they can individually be watched and scrutinised
Is the patient aware of the irrationality in phobia?
Yes
What is panic disorder?
Unpredicitable panic attacks - not assoc with other condition e.g. depression
Chronic - will just be better at certain points in time
