Anxiety Flashcards
Explain the basic MOA of anxiety treatment
Slowing neuronal activity in the nervous system
Why are benzodiazepines preferred over barbiturates for anxiety treatment?
BDZs are less toxic and have lower risk of developing dependence and tolerance
How does busperione work in the treatment of GAD?
Busperione is a 5-HT1a partial agonist. It works by increasing serotonin activity in the amygdala
What are some advantages of busperione compared to BDZ or barbiturates?
Not a muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant or sedative
Has minimal risks of dependence and withdrawal issues
Why do anxiolytic drugs take a while to take effect?
Over time they induce desensitisation of 5-HT autoreceptors, which leads to the heightened excitation of serotenergic neurons.
TCAs and SSRIs are used for anxiety and depression, but in anxiety ……
The dose is much higher
