Antiviral drugs Flashcards
Name the two types of viruses
Nonenveloped and enveloped
Name the 4 types of antiviral drug classes we are responsable for
NRTIs/NtRTIs
NNRTIs
Integrase Inhibitors
Protease Inhibitors
True/False? HIV is an enveloped virus
True
What are 2 types of drugs against HIV?
NRTIs/NNRTIs
Protease inhibitors
True/False? There is a cure for HIV
False
We can only prevent it as best we can
What is Zidovudine (AZT) and how does it work?
Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor:
Analog of Thymidine, terminates elongation, can’t be concatenated
AND
competitive inhibitor of RTase
What is Lamivudine (3TC) and how does it work?
Analogue of Deoxycytidine, ends synthesis early
fewer side effects than AZT
What is Tenofovir and how does it work?
NtRTI: Analog of AMP, inhibits reverse transcriptase
How many phosphate units does Tenofovir diphosphate have?
Three (analog of ATP)
How do integrase inhibitors work?
We don’t need to know
How does HIV protease work?
Homodimerizes, cleaves GagPol
What are the 2 proteins expressed on Viral envelopes?
Neuraminidase
Hemagglutinin
How does influenza virus enter cells?
Hemagglutinin binds sialic acids on cell membrane
How does influenza virus leave cells?
Neuraminidase cleaves sialic acid receptor
What are 3 types of Nucleoside Reverse-Transcriptase Inhibitor?
Zidovudine, Lamivudine, Tenofovir
