Antiprotozoal Drugs Flashcards
What is Hemozoin?
A byproduct of heme digestion by malaria, insoluble non-toxic crystals
What do Quinine and Chloroquine do?
(tonic water)
Accumulate in digestive vesicles of Plasmodium and inhibit heme polymerase (prevents hemozoin formation)
What is artesunate?
Semisynthetic prodrug, interferes with hemoglobin metabolism by producing free radicals
Which two antibacterial drugs can be used as antimalarial drugs?
Doxycycline (tetracycline)
azithromycin (macrolide)
They target ribosomes within parasite mitochondria
(can also affect human mitochondria)
What are the two stages of malaria’s life cycle, and where is each cycle located in its host(s)?
Asexual reproductive phase: human liver blood cells
Sexual phase:
mosquito salivary glands/gut
