Antiviral Drugs Flashcards

1
Q

Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors

A

Antiretroviral drug.
Blocks activity of the enzyme “reverse transcriptase.” (prevents elongation of chain, blocks viral DNA)
Subclasses: Nucleoside RTI, non-nucleoside RTI

Q

Nucleoside RTI

A

Subclass of Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors.
Competes with cell nucleosides for DNA synthesis.
DRUG: Zidovudine
Adverse effects: Bone marrow suppression: anemia and neutropenia

Q

Protease Inhibitors

A

Antiretroviral drug (HIV).
Inhibits retroviral protease enzyme, preventing viral protein preparation.
Protease breaks amino acid chain to create functional proteins. Protease inhibitors leave amino chain in tact, unable to make proteins.
DRUG: Ritonavir (many drug interactions, CYP450 inhibitor)

Q

Neuraminidase Inhibitors

A

Releases viral particle from cell. Compared to antivirals which top the release.
Can be used prophylactically.
Used for H1N1
Reduces recovery time
DRUG: Oseltamivir (tamiflu) - Effective against influenza A and B

16
Q

What medication is used for Cytomegalovirus (CMV)?

A

Ganciclovir
Somewhat similar to acyclovir (which is used for herpes virus, chickenpox/shingles)

Ganciclovir is a DNA polymerase inhibitor. Synthetic nucleoside analogue. Available in oral and parenteral forms.

17
Q

Ganciclovir treats what?

A

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

18
Q

What antiviral drug is used to treat respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?

A

Ribavirin - Synthetic nucleoside

19
Q

Acyclovir

A

DNA polymerase Inhibitor

Used for herpes virus (HSV, VZV - chickenpox/shingles).
