Antiplatelet Drugs Flashcards
Why would you use an antiplatelet drug over a heparin/anticoagulant?
Anti-platelet drugs work better in arterial circulation.
They are widely used in primary and secondary prevention of thrombotic cerebrovascular
or cardiovascular disease

Why do COX inhibitors function as antiplatelet drugs?
COX enzymes are involved in the production of thromboxane. COX inhbitors prevent the production of thromboxane A2 by platelets
Why do ADP receptor inhibitors function as antiplatelet drugs?
ADP contributes to aggregation
Why do phosphodiesterase inhibitors function as antiplatelet drugs?
Phosphodiesterase converts cAMP to AMP, which can eventually be converted to ADP
Why do GP3a2b inhibitors function as antiplatelet drugs?
GP3a2b receptors are connected by fibrin in platelet aggregation. Blocking these receptors blocks aggregation
