Antioxidants/ free radicals Flashcards
what are free radical/ reactant oxygen what do they damage where do they come from
contain unpaired electrons in outer shell
can create chain of many free rads
damage membranes, pro + dna
from mitochondria
What are the exogenous Antioxidants
Vit. C Vit E carotenoids Flaveniods Ubiquinones
free rads can be produced thru
normal ox. metabolism
redistribution of blood flow
immune respone
disruption of calcium homeostasis
how does free rads affect signal cascade post workout
ROS iss signaling molecule that triggers muscle adaptive processes but too much antioxidants can interfere w the process.
positives/ negatives of antioxidants
pos- recovery, less fatigue, less muscle damage
neg- less angiogenesis, less insulin sensitivity, less hypertrophy, recover
The inflammatory response post ex. and how does antioxidants affect it
post ex. there is an increase in free rads+ inflammation
other immune cells such as neutrophils+ macrophages/monocytes are attracted to site (remove damaged tissue)
too much anti alter the recruitment of these cells and muscle regeneration process
