Antihypertensives Flashcards
alpha 2 adrenergic agonist
clonidine
methyldopa
alpha 2 adrenergic agonist mechanism of action
- stimulate receptors in Brain stem and autonomic regulation of cardiovascular system
- neurons stop releasing norepinephrine
- decrease sympathetic output
Are alpha 2 adrenergic agonist 1st line drug HTN?
NO, reduces BP but doesn’t reduce M/M
Clonidine therapeutic uses
HTN emergencies can chew clonidine and swallow
Tourette’s disorder
ADHD adjunct
withdrawal symptoms (nicotine, opiates, benzo’s, alcohol)
Methylodopa therapeutic uses
Drug of Choice for Pregnancy induced HTN
alpha 2 adrenergic agonist adverse effects
orthostatic hypotension dizziness headache rebound fluid retention-add a diuretic impaired ejaculation
alpha 2 adrenergic agonist Warnings
abrupt withdrawal causes severe rebound HTN
alpha 1 blocker
doxazosin alfuzosin terazosin tamsulosin prazosin
alpha 1 blocker Mechanism of action
HTN- vasodilation of vasculature
BPH- relax smooth muscle of bladder neck and prostate
Alpha 1 blocker therapeutic uses
BPH- urinary retnetion
Raynaud’s disase
Are alpha 1 blockers a 1st line drug for HTN?
NO- don’t reduce M/M
alpha 1 blocker adverse effects
Orthostatic hypotension “First Dose Effect”
reflex tachycardia
sodium and water retention
alpha 1 blocker drug interactions
hypotention when used with vardenafil and sildenafil
Alfuzosin contraindicated with CYP3A4 inhibitors
