Antihistamines Flashcards

1
Q

Antihistamines

Adverse effects

A

Primarily due to antihistamine effects: sedation or CNS stimulation, anticholinergic effects( anti -slud)
-dizziness, tinnitus, uncoordinated, blurry vision, nervousness, insomnia, tremors
-loss of appetite, N/V, constipation
, diarrhea, increase appetite or weight gain

Q

Second generation antihistamines

A

DONT cross the BBB
Actions similiar to 1st generation; primarily H1 antagonist actions
Newer
Better tolerated; less AEs
Non-sedating: less likely to make you sleepy
Less CNS penetration

Q

Antihistamines

MOA

A

Actions primarily due to H1 antagonist actions

  • active on many histamine effects: vasodilation, capillary permeability, itching and redness
  • mixed effects on sexretions
  • sedating and CNS stimulating effects
  • anticholinergic effects (ANTI-SLUD)
  • actions may last longer than drugs t1/2
