Amphitheater
An open-air circular or semicircular theater with tiered seating
Where would you set Antigone?
The largest of the National’s three theatres, the Olivier, which is built in the style of an amphitheatre with a fan-shaped auditorium
Why is an amphitheatre useful?
Its circular or semicircular design allows for excellent sightlines and acoustic properties
Why is a fan-shaped auditorium useful?
It provides a wider viewing angle – allowing more audience members to have an unobstructed view of the stage and enhancing the overall immersive experience
Throne
A prominent and elevated chair used to represent the seat of power
Sepulcher
A structure or area within the set design that represents the tomb of Polyneices
Pillars
Tall and vertical columns or structures that can be incorporated into the set design to create a sense of grandeur and establish the classical Greek architectural aesthetic
Ruins
Partially destroyed or decayed structures that can be used to evoke a sense of history or tragedy or the aftermath of conflict – reflecting the themes of destruction and suffering in Antigone
