Antigen Flashcards
Immunogen
Substances that generate immune response
Antigen
Any substance that reacts with T or B cells
Relationship between antigens and immunogens
All immunogens are antigens, but not all antigens are immunogens
Alloantigen
Antigen determinants found on a molecular structure of some species members, but not on corresponding molecular structure of other members of species
Mitogen
Substance that induces multiple clones of cells
Binds to exterior of all T cells
Superantigens
Bind to outside of normal T cell binding area, causing activation of multiple T cells (dependent on variable region)
Common superantigens
Staphylococcal enterotoxins
Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1
Haptens
Small molecules that can’t induce immune response on own; must be bound to carrier molecule
What antigen conformations B cells recognize
Primary (amino acid sequence) and tertiary (folded protein)
What antigen conformations T cells recognize
Primary only (amino acid sequence)
Adjuvant
Prolongs antigen persistance
Enhances co-stimulatory signal
Stimulates lymphocytes nonspecifically
Epitope
Small site on antigen which is recognized by antibody
Antigenic determinant
Cluster of epitopes on surface of antigen
Interaction with antigen: B cells
Binary complex of membrane antibody and antigen
Interaction with antigen: T cells
Ternary complex of T cell receptor, antigen, and MHC molecule
