1) stimulate the release of insulin and increase sensitivity of insulin receptors on cells

Considerations/contraindications with Sulfonylureas
Type 2 - If insulin started sulfonylureas are stopped
Conditions predisposed to hypoglycemia
Can not use is allergic to sulfa or urea

Hypoglycemia , dixiness , headache , skin rash , weight gain
Non-Sulfonylureas Action/Use
Biguanides - tell liver to cut down on glucose production
Alpha- Glucosidase - keeps carbs from being absorbed so quickly to prevent glucose spikes

Glucophage (Metformin)
What does Glucophage do?
Decrease production of glucose from liver
Side effects of Non-sulfonylureas
Nausea , vomiting , diarrhea , hypoglycemia
Glucagon action/use
Emergency treatment of hypoglycemia
