Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
How does MAOI work?
metabolize monoamines, S, N, D–> increase synaptic levels
MAOI- Adverse Effects
HT, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, C
MAOI- CI
SSRI, Buspirone–> serotonin syndrome; tyramine foods–> severe vasoconstriction
MAOI- How do you develop toxicity (foods)
after eating tyramine-rich food–> wine, cheese, smoked/pickled fish, beer, chocolate
MAOI- Sx of toxicity
severe HTN, sweating, flushing, anxiety, irritability, severe HA
MAOI- How does toxicity happen?
If MAOI cannot breakdown tyramine, vasoconstriction may occur resulting in an elevation in BP
MAOI- How long do you have stop antidepressants before starting MAOI?
2 weeks
Amitriptyline, Imipramine, Clompiramine
Tricyclic Drugs
TCA- Adverse Effects
blurred. vision, urinary retention, C, dry mouth, weight gain
TCA- Patient Teaching
move positions slowly, dont take with MAOI
Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram
Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitor
SSRI- Adverse Effects
insomnia, sexual dysfunction, DM, sweating, weight change
SSRI- When does it start working?
2-4 weeks

St. John’s Wort, MAOI, Tramadol

over activation of serotonin

sweating, tachycardia, HTN, irritability, muscle spasm, delirium
