Antibodies- Diebel Flashcards
What are the two flavors of light chains?
Kappa
Lambda
Does the type of light chain change during class switching?
NO!!!! Stays the same
What part of the antibody is changing during class switching?
The heavy chain!
How many types of heavy chains are there?
5
What defines the class of an antibody?
The heavy chain
How many isotypes are there?
aka as subtypes, there are 10
Function of IgG?
most common in blood and tissue fluids
Neutralizes toxins
Does some complement activation
Function of IgA?
Best for antiviral activity and toxin neutralization
Function of IgM?
Best for bacterial lysis and complement fixation
**first antibody to appear in serum after immunization
Function of IgE?
Mast cell/basophil degranulation
*responsible for type 1 hypersensitivity
Function of IgD?
Functions mainly as receptor on naive B cells
What do elevated levels of IgM indicate?
recent infection (haven’t class switched yet?
What is the only antibody that can cross the placenta?
IgG
What are the four ways antibody diversity is created?
- Gene rearrangment
- Variation incorporated at joining sights
- Hypermutation of variable region
- Mixing and matching of heavy and light chians
What is the role of RAG recombinases?
Enzymes that do recombination of antibody DNA are RAG-1 and RAG2
